Celebrating new stars in Bad Ragaz


As of today, the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz will be lit by the glow of four Michelin stars. This evening in Lugano when the stars were presented, the two chefs de cuisine, Silvio Germann and Sven Wassmer, each received two stars for their restaurants IGNIV by Andreas Caminada and Memories.


Time to pop the corks at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz: the resort has a total of three new Michelin stars to celebrate. Each of the two top chefs, Silvio Germann (IGNIV by Andreas Caminada) and Sven Wassmer (Memories), and their respective teams received two Michelin stars. This means that the two fine-dining restaurants at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz are among the best restaurants in Switzerland. Fewer than two dozen restaurants in Switzerland have been honoured with two Michelin stars.


This is a sensational start for 33-year-old Sven Wassmer. Within just eight months of opening his restaurant Memories, he has made it to the top league of Swiss chefs. Wassmer is no stranger to this league because his restaurant at his previous location in Vals also earned two stars. “For me, these two stars are the reward for all the hard work of the past year,” says Wassmer. By that, he also means designing the new concept for his fine-dining restaurant, which he started on in January 2019. “But it would be impossible to cook at such a high level without my team,” Wassmer says, emphasising that cooking at Michelin star level always takes teamwork. “An incredible accomplishment that we could all only achieve together.”


The Michelin inspectors rewarded Silvio Germann with a second star in his fifth year at IGNIV, underscoring the consistently high performance of Germann and his young team. “The second star came as a complete surprise,” says Germann, “but we are overjoyed, and this motivates us to continue on the same path.” He is also a team player to the core: “Every single person in this team gives their all every day to make our guests happy.” According to Germann, that is the deciding factor. From the beginning, 30-year-old Germann has played a key role in shaping the fine-dining sharing experience concept designed by Andreas Caminada. The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is also very pleased about these two awards. Marco R. Zanolari, General Manager of the Grand Hotels, put it this way: “With this honour, the five-star culinary world at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has climbed to new heights. We offer Sven Wassmer and Silvio Germann and their teams our heartfelt congratulations on this achievement.” At the presentation of the 2020 Michelin Guide in Lugano, the two chefs received the honours they deserve in front of around 130 colleagues from throughout Switzerland. With these successes, the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has reinforced its reputation as an outstanding culinary destination in Eastern Switzerland.


The Michelin Guide has been produced for Switzerland since 1994. The Michelin inspectors place great importance on the fact that their award is for the restaurant and not the head chef. This is because experts agree that cooking at Michelin star level is a team sport. The chefs de cuisine at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz – Silvio Germann (IGNIV by Andreas Caminada) and Sven Wassmer (Memories) – prove that this is the case in their daily work.
